Will serve as interim pastor for Gary's St. Timothy Community Church

Lake Superior Court Judge Calvin D. Hawkins has been appointed interim pastor of the St. Timothy Community Church in Gary.

"We are happy to announce the appointment of Judge Hawkins to serve as interim pastor of our congregation. We need stability from a spiritual perspective. We feel Calvin provides that for us at this time," said Gregory Jones, St. Timothy Board of Trustee president.

Hawkins, who possesses a Master of Divinity degree from Wesley Theological Seminary said, "I am humbled by this new assignment and will endeavor to do those things that need to be done at St. Timothy in addition to fulfilling my judicial responsibilities."

The 1500-member church officially became known as St. Timothy Community Church in 1949. For many years the church was pastored by Robert Lowery until his death in 2007. His successor, Alfred Johnson, died in 2016.

Currently, Hawkins sits as a civil jurist at the Lorenzo Arredondo Justice Center in East Chicago, Indiana.

Pastoral Search Committee Chair Linda Miles said, "St. Timothy launched its pastoral search in August. Our goal is to have a recommendation to the Board by Easter, 2018. At this juncture, Pastor Calvin Hawkins will serve as interim until a full-time pastor is confirmed."
