District launches intensive summer literacy program

Registration for summer literacy programs is underway at Gary Community Schools
The GCSC Summer Literacy Program is an intensive reading intervention program available for students in grades Kindergarten through 12. The purpose of the program is to further improve the student’s proficiency in literacy by developing their academic vocabulary, background knowledge, and prepare them for testing.
“Many research projects have concluded that “Reading proficiency by third grade is one of the most important predictors of high school graduation and career success,” said Dr. Cheryl Pruitt, Superintendent, Gary Community School Corporation. “Based on the curriculum for our Summer Literacy Program, I expect more third-grade students will be reading at or above grade level.”
Project-based learning models are used to stimulate and challenge students to read like detectives and write like reporters. Upon completion of the program, students are expected to have increased competency in literacy skills across all content areas including math, writing, science and more. Also, GCSC third-grade students who did not pass IREAD-3 are required to attend a mandatory literacy program.
The Summer Literacy Programs takes place 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday, June 12 through July 10. The program is offered at Frankie Woods McCullough Academy for Girls (3757 W. 21st Ave.) and Marquette Elementary School (6401 Hemlock Ave.) for students in grades kindergarten through 6.
The program is also offered at the Gary Area Career Center (1800 E. 35th Ave.) for students in grades 7 and 8. High school students may attend the West Side Leadership Academy (900 Gerry St.) or Wirt-Emerson Visual and Performing Arts High Ability Academy (210 N. Grand Blvd.)
