East Chicago breaks ground on Lakeshore Manor senior housing

Amenities most requested by seniors will replace aging Nicosia Highrise
On Thursday, October 27th, the East Chicago Housing Authority held a groundbreaking ceremony for the $40 Million Lakeshore Manor Senior Housing Development, along Main and Guthrie, that will replace the aging John B. Nicosia Senior Housing highrise.
In place of the 9-story building that dominated the Indiana Harbor landscape since 1972 will be Lakeshore Manor – two, four story buildings containing 206 bright and airy apartments that include amenities most requested by seniors.
“There have been so many changes in senior housing over the last 50 years,” said Tia Cauley, Executive Director of the East Chicago Housing Authority. “The city and housing authority have been working for years to create the best development possible for East Chicago senior citizens.”
Developer Ezra Burdix, owner of DTM Real Estate Services of Indianapolis, said Lakeshore Manor will be welcoming to all who live and visit there.
“We have paid attention to every detail, including air quality and the overall environment,” Burdix said. “At completion, Lakeshore Manor will be one of the premier senior housing developments in North America.”
“When I first saw this project, I fell in love with it. Exchanging the Nicosia Building for a better quality of life for our seniors holds great importance to our city,” stated Mayor Anthony Copeland.
The city’s new senior housing will be only blocks from the Lake Michigan shore amid the new walkable city development known as North Harbor. Built to green standards, the development will include secure, brightly lit entrances, color-coded elevators and floors, ADA units, as well as energy-efficient heating and cooling.
