Mayor says unidentified substance in water; Marquette Beach is open

Gary's Lake Street Beach is under a temporary closure as of Friday, September 2 Gary Mayor Jerome Prince announced.

The statement from Mayor Prince said, "This morning, after consulting with environmental experts in my administration and state regulatory officials, I ordered the closure of our Lake Street beach to the public due to the presence of an unknown substance in the water in the area. The beach will remain closed on a day-by-day basis as we run tests and closely monitor the situation.

"As of this morning, we have not detected signs of the unknown substance at our Marquette Beach, which will remain open until further notice. However, we are monitoring Marquette Beach, and we will close that beach if we detect any unknown substances there.

"We enjoy our amazing beaches in Gary, and we are happy to welcome every Gary resident and visitor to enjoy them. However, public safety is our top priority, and we extend that commitment to our beaches and parks.

"We will keep the public informed of any developments in a timely manner.”
