Video projects cap off Gary Community School Corp. 2019-2020 school year

Covid-19 couldn't stop Visual and Performing Arts staff and students

Students and staff of the Gary Community School Corporation Fine Arts Department created video projects, serving as capstones to the 2019-2020 school year that was challenged by the Covid-19 pandemic. End-of-year projects were produced by Gary Middle School for Visual and Performing Arts and the West Side Theatre Guild Performing Arts Department at West Side Leadership Academy.

GMS for VPA produced an innovative piece entitled "Do You Believe In Magic?" Students submitted independent performances via cellophane and were edited into an entertaining product. The video was produced by Asia Dickens -choreography, Eric ‘E.J.’ Jackson - musical direction, Crystal Deluna - visual art consultant, Passion Jefferson - video editor, and Antoinette Dixon, GMS principal.

The West Side Theatre Guild Performing Arts Department at West Side Leadership Academy created a video paying tribute to music legend Bill Withers. The Guild chose to create an ensemble piece using the Withers classic, "Lovely Day." WSTG students and staff also contributed performance pieces via video platforms.

The video also includes contributions from Gary Mayor Jerome Prince, GCSC Emergency Manager Paige McNulty and West Side Principal Othiniel Mahone.

The Bill Withers tribute was produced and directed by Mark Spencer, M.Ed., GCSC Director of Fine Arts; Markeysha Coleman – drama; Keith Nelson – choir; Rovelli Grib – orchestra; DeAndre Teamer – band; Cheryl Barnes – Dance; Josh Ishmon – dance; Devonna Edwards – dance; Claude Kelly III – audio recording; and Dan Button – producer, editor and graphics designer.
