Another student alerts staff

Gary Police are investigating why an elementary school student at Banneker at Marquette brought a weapon to the school on Wednesday, August 21.

Chelsea Whittington, the spokesperson for Gary Community School Corp. said staff at the school were alerted at 1:15 p.m. by a student that another student had a weapon.

The statement did not identify the type of weapon.

Banneker, a K-6 school in Gary’s Miller neighborhood was immediately placed on lock down.

Whittington said law enforcement searched the building and a weapon was found. “The involved parties were identified and parents notified. School was dismissed at 2:55 p.m., and the matter is now being handled by the Gary Police Department. No students were harmed during this incident.”

"Our main concern is the safety of our children and that all of our buildings are safe," said Emergency Manager Dr. Peter Morikis. “I commend the student for speaking up and alerting staff right away. This allowed our team to act quickly and diffuse the situation. "

All Banneker at Marquette parents/guardians were notified of the incident via robocall. Whittington said, “The matter is under investigation, and no further information will be shared at this time.”
