Lakeshore Classic Basketball starts holiday sports season

Thanksgiving weekend, November 23-24 at West Side Leadership Academy

The Gary Chamber of Commerce’s annual Lakeshore Classic will celebrate its 11 year anniversary on November 23rd -24th 2018. The annual high school basketball tournament starts the end-of-year holiday sports season on Thanksgiving weekend at West Side Leadership Academy in Gary.

Kicking off the tournament is the Lakeshore Classic Corporate Luncheon which brings in athletes and coaches as special guest speakers. The speaker for this year’s corporate luncheon is Gary’s own LaTroy Hawkins, retired Major League Baseball pitcher and 1991 graduate of West Side High School. Hawkins was drafted in 1991 by the Minnesota Twins and retired in 2015.

The luncheon is 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 20 at the RailCats Baseball Stadium Diamond Center, 500 E. 5th Avenue, Gary. Tickets are $50 person and table of ten for $450.

Past speakers have included Bryce Drew, Gregg Popovich, Gene Keady, Bob Love, Oscar Robertson, Dick Barnett, Lloyd McClendon, Junior Bridgeman, and Jesse White.

Four games will be played over two days, starting with Friday’s matchup between the girls of West Side vs John Marshall of Chicago at 6 p.m. The following game at 8 p.m. features boys teams Thea Bowman vs George Washington of Indianapolis.

Saturday’s first game is boys Theodore Roosevelt vs Calumet New Tech at 6 p.m., followed by West Side boys vs Marquette Catholic of Michigan City.

Adult tickets are $8 one day and $10 in advance for two days.

Student tickets are $5 one day and $7 in advance for two days.
