Gary school’s emergency manager Peggy Hinckley opened Tuesday’s school board meeting to debunk a post on Facebook that 2 bodies were found at the closed Watson Boys Academy, 2065 Mississippi. “In fact, while school staff was upstairs, two men came into the building who decided they wanted to take some things,” Hinckley said.

Thursday, Gary Police Dept. Burglary Unit Sgt. Mario Gonzalez filed felony charges against Del Rico Hardy, age 44, of Gary and Kevin Levar Kizer, age 34, of Gary. On Tuesday, March 13, the two men were observed by GPD officer Simon Lillie breaking into Watson with sledgehammers.

Kizer was apprehended by officers in the basement of the building while Hardy ran and hid in a crawlspace. Hardy was taken into custody with the assistance of Cpl. Siegfield, of the Hammond Police Department, and his canine partner, who made the apprehension.

Hardy was treated and released from Methodist Hospital for injuries sustained during the apprehension.

Both individuals made statements to Sgt. Gonzalez that they broke into the school to make some money by taking copper pipes from the school to scrap them.
