City launches program to gain construction jobs for residents

“It’s a 3-punch approach to compliance,” said Tammi Davis about the upcoming Northwest Indiana Compliance Forum and Gary Resident Trade Fair.

In the construction world, near the end of a project, the punch list shows work not conforming to contract specs and when that work will be completed or corrected.

Davis, Director of Compliance & Policy Engagement for the Gary Sanitary District, said the forum will focus on workforce diversity in construction and how it can be achieved within hiring goals on local, state, and federally funded projects.”

The Gary Sanitary District is the sponsor and often takes the lead on major City of Gary construction projects.

The forum will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Tuesday, September 26, at the Genesis Convention Center in downtown Gary.

Split in two sessions, the first will be a panel of government agencies, contractors, apprenticeship coordinators, construction trade unions and community advocacy organizations. They will discuss their specific experiences, regulations and best practices relating to workforce diversity in construction.

This session, Davis said, will be of interest to contractors, economic development specialists, policy makers, compliance professionals, diversity officers, and construction workers.

The second session is the Gary Residents Trade Fair and launch of the Gary Resident in the Trades Program (GRIT).

Gary residents that are either already in a construction trade as a journeyperson or apprentice, or interested in getting into a construction trade will have the opportunity to network and meet with contractors and apprenticeship coordinators. Proof of residency, a Driver’s License or State ID must be provided to enter this portion of the trade fair.

The GRIT program is designed to increase the identification, recruitment and utilization of Gary residents on construction projects.
