GPTC will announce details at open house
Gary Public Transportation Corporation (GPTC) will detail the launch and features of the Broadway Metro Express bus service, a “Rapid Bus” line from downtown Gary to Merrillville and Crown Point at an open house on April 12.
The Broadway Metro Express is GPTC's central implementation project from the Livable Broadway Regional Plan.
The April 12 event will discuss how the service developed in partnership and cooperation with its partner communities and other agencies. The event will also feature the new branding campaign for the service which includes advertising and posters to be displayed in the buses and the Gary Metro Center, artwork for new shelters designed by local artists, and the new Broadway Metro Express logo. The visible improvements are part of the branding campaign to raise awareness of the new service.
Broadway Metro Express service will provide a 50% increase in trips over existing service – from every 30 minutes to every 20 minutes – and will expand the service area through new feeder routes. Along with more frequent service, GPTC will provide enhancements along Broadway to include new stations, more visible crosswalks and new bus bypass lanes at several proposed bus stations.
GPTC officials say the new bypass lanes will improve safety and speed in boarding and will be installed at stops north of 61st Avenue.
“These important decisions are all designed to maximize the benefit of transit service and accessibility for our riders and the citizens of Gary,” said GPTC General Manager Daryl E. Lampkins.
GPTC commissioned the Livable Broadway Regional Plan to assess opportunities for improving bus service within Gary, Merrillville and Crown Point. The service was funded using a combination of local and federal funds. Elements of the Livable Broadway Plan (service, road work and infrastructure) are being overseen by local, regional and state agencies.
The open house will be held Wednesday, April 12, at the Gary Arthouse: A Social Kitchen, 411 E. 5th Avenue in Gary from 4 to 6 p.m.
GPTC operates eleven routes in Northwest Indiana. Five of these comprise a Local Network – routes that operate completely within City of Gary limits. The other six Regional network routes reach Calumet Township, Crown Point, East Chicago, Griffith, Hammond, Highland, Hobart, Merrillville and Munster.
