Black Oak school closed in 2013, has reopened for pre-school to 6th grade

Gary’s Black Oak neighborhood was hit hard in 2013 when the Lake Ridge School District closed Grissom Elementary School because of a $1.7 million budget deficit. The school was the center of the small community on Gary’s southwest side.

Then, Supt. Sharon Johnson-Shirley said the school closing had to be made to save the district.

Andrea Carter, founder of Mosaic International School, announced Wednesday that the school, once sharing space in the John Will Anderson Boys & Girls Club in Gary had its first day at Grissom on Monday, January 9th. “We lacked the space to expand our program offerings that were critical for student success such as after school intensive reading tutoring.”

Mosaic is private and faith-based, accredited as an Indiana choice school. Parents who cannot afford the tuition can receive a state school voucher. School vouchers allow a student to take state money – normally distributed only to public schools on a per-pupil basis – to a private school of his or her choice.

Carter said Mosaic’s permanent home resulted from its partnership with Northstar Commercial Partners CEO Brian Watson. Northstar, a commercial real estate investment firm, heard of Mosaic’s plight and offered its assistance in securing Grissom.

Northstar will invest additional capital in the school at 7201 W. 25th Avenue to meet the needs of Mosaic International and to ensure that the facility meets state regulations.

Mosaic plans to have a Ribbon Cutting & Dedication Ceremony on January 27th.
