The 19-year-old has recurring roles in "The Chi" and "Power Book IV: Force" series

"I don't think of myself as a celebrity. I'm just a working actor," Ahmad Ferguson told the kids at the Lake Ridge Middle School summer camp Wednesday. If not an actual celebrity, he is someone the camp's sponsor thought their students should know.

Some already know him from the Showtime series "The Chi" and Starz TV "Power Book IV: Force" series

Ferguson was introduced by his mother Altovise, also an actor. Altovise said Ahmad had appeared with her on stage locally and nationally since childhood. In his early teens, he was picked from a casting call of hundreds. "After that, I got him an agent," she said.

The scene at the summer camp was pretty much like how he experienced middle school, Ahmad said. "It's a blessing to have a program to learn new skills and crafts."

The summer camp is operated by the Institute for Leadership and Performance Improvement. James Ward, the camp coordinator, said it's a 4-week STREAM program where recreation and the arts are included with science, technology, engineering and math.

The 19-year-old is from Gary; he played basketball in high school, graduating from Hammond Morton.

Ahmad commutes to Cinespace Chicago Film Studios for work where both series are filmed. A new season of 'The Chi' premieres June 24.

On following his passions: "Michael Jackson was from Gary; how can I not be what I want to be."
